What's on Tap at the River Pub?
keiths_india_pale_ale.jpg

Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale was originally crafted for British troops serving in India. The high quality ingredients and the preservative effect of hops kept the beer fresh on the long voyage down the coast of Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope and into the Indian Ocean. This superior ale soon became the favourite of British troops everywhere. With so many soldiers stationed in Halifax, each with a daily 1 gallon ration of beer, it made sense that the city have its own India Pale Ale- or so thought Alexander Keith. In 1820 he began brewing India Pale Ale under his own name. To this day, his fine ale is still produced only in Halifax.

propeller_bitter.jpg

Gold Medal Winner, 2006 and 2007 at the World Beer Championships in Chicago. Propeller Bitter is a rich, full-bodied English-style bitter made from a blend of two-row malts, including pale malt, crystal malt (for body and residual sweetness) and chocolate malt (for its rich flavour and colour). A last small addition of malted wheat helps deliver its pleasing head.

Bitter was originally a draught ale served very fresh under no pressure (gravity or hand pump dispensing only) at cellar temperatures. Lucky for you today its available everywhere! Our most popular brew is not really a bitter beer, it's a better Bitter!

River Pub Ale is brewed specifically for the Pub by our friends at Propeller Brewery. It is an inspiring combination of Honey Wheat Ale and a Pale Ale. It is light in colour and smooth on the tongue. You can even purchase the glass when you are finished!

Created in the same vein as Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale, Alexander Keith's Light Ale is light in colour and hopped in flavour. Available only in Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick, Keith's Light Ale is known as a light tasting ale whose subtle black licorice/anise notes contribute to its character. In terms of flavour, Alexander Keith's Light Ale is known for its clean bitterness, slightly sweet/malty flavour and light body. It is also smooth and well balanced, with a light ester undertone which gives Keith's Light Ale its floral/fruity nose.

Adored since 1759, it’s the powerful surge and settle that gives GUINNESS® Draught beer its uniqueness. Lovingly poured around the world, GUINNESS® Draught is one of best-selling imported beers in the USA.

A unique mix of nitrogen and carbon dioxide helps create GUINNESS® Draught’s liquid swirl that tumbles, surges and gradually separates into a black body and smooth creamy head. The rise and fall of our bubbles has perplexed PhD physicists. But all you need to focus on is the taste. With an initial malt and caramel flavour, GUINNESS® Draught finishes with a dry roasted bitterness. Enjoy.

Six Degrees of Preparation
GUINNESS® Draught is best served at 6°C (that’s 42.8°F), with the legendary two-part pour. First, tilt the glass to 45 degrees and carefully pour until three quarters full. Then place the glass on the bar counter and leave to settle. Once the surge has settled, fill the glass to the brim. It takes about 119.5 seconds to pour the perfect pint. But don’t fret. It’s worth the wait.

stella_artois.jpg

Stella Artois was first brewed as a Christmas beer in Leuven.  It was named Stella, from the star of Christmas, and Artois after Sebastian Artois, founder of the brewery.  It's brewed to perfection using the original Stell Artois yeast and the celebrated Saaz hops.  It's the optimum premium lager, with it's full flavour and clean crisp taste.

It is still brewed using only natural ingredients, with the same process of mixing and fermentation as in the old days.  This guarantees that the beer you drink is something we're proud of.
